The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jammu welcomed Dr Daniel Sokol, a renowned medical ethicist and trial advocate. Following a highly successful first visit in 2024, his new lecture was eagerly anticipated by students and faculty alike, who recognised the opportunity to gain first-hand insights into medical ethics from an international expert in the field.

 

Dr Sokol arrived at AIIMS Jammu to an enthusiastic reception, as both faculty members and students gathered to greet him. Senior academics from the institute introduced Dr Sokol, highlighting his significant contributions to the discipline and his reputation for delivering engaging lectures with a practical focus.

 

The seminar, held in the institute's main auditorium, drew a large audience of clinicians. Drawing on years of teaching ethics to clinicians facing disciplinary action, Daniel Sokol shared five essential lessons that every practising clinician and student should know, touching on themes of honesty, power, and integrity.

 

His clear explanations and use of real-world scenarios demonstrated the practical value of medical ethics to frontline clinicians.

 

Throughout the seminar, Dr Sokol encouraged active participation from the audience. Students and faculty were invited to share their perspectives and pose challenging questions. This interactive approach fostered a lively and enriching dialogue, with many attendees voicing their appreciation for the opportunity to discuss practical ethical issues relevant to their own clinical practice.

 

Feedback from the seminar was overwhelmingly positive. Students remarked on the clarity and relevance of Dr Sokol’s examples, which ranged from consent and confidentiality within a family-focussed culture to the ethical management of scarce resources. Faculty members commended his ability to engage both seasoned professionals and those new to the subject, making the seminar accessible and stimulating for all. Copies of Dr Sokol’s latest book, "From Error to Ethics" were offered to attendees, courtesy of the Berry Trust. 

 

Dr Sokol’s visit left a lasting impression on the AIIMS Jammu community. Many participants expressed a renewed interest in ethical reasoning and a deeper appreciation for the role of ethics in medicine. The event concluded with a vote of thanks, and Dr Sokol was personally invited to future seminars by Director Dr Shakti Gupta. The visit reinforced AIIMS Jammu’s commitment to fostering ethical awareness among future healthcare leaders.
